In an interview with Radio Times, Amanda Ross, who now runs the Zoe Ball Book Club, suggested that their decision was prompted by the financial success of the featured writers. The Richard and Judy Book Club, presented by married couple Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan, was a huge success when it was launched as a minute weekly segment on their Channel 4 TV show in , regularly attracting 2. But the book club has long divided the publishing world. Why are they treating them as if they are stupid? Richard Madeley and Judy Finnigan catapulted authors to the top of bestseller charts, with their annual list, which was discussed on their daily Channel 4 prime time TV chat show. After such success stories as their endorsement for Starter for Ten by David Nicholls, which increased its sales by per cent, the pair's hunt for a rare "captivating and distracting holiday book" became one of the most important events in Britain's publishing calendar. But when they moved their show to digital television channel in , due to low ratings, their influence in publishing has markedly declined. Their declining influence is perhaps also due in part to people finding book advice on digital platforms and sales outlets like Amazon. This year's list was put out, without fanfare, on their website, and made a sidebar in the Mirror's profile interview about the couple's marriage. It's a varied list with guaranteed bestsellers and new fiction by debut novelists. While little-known novelists can't expect the stepladder to the bestselling spot that they might once have enjoyed, there's no doubt that the list still holds some sway.
